July 2011 Memories

Did you have fun in July? We surely did! Now, let's see what we have done in this month...

For our [Un]Discovers department, Septembre Anderson, the editor-in-chief of J'adore, has featured 3 amazing talents and they are: Renee Thompson (the founder of reel2runway.com), fashion designer Rachel Sin and Chinedu Ukabam. We are impressed with the entires and hopefully we will be working with Septembre again!

Aside from the 3 features, we did have John Woo for our first [Un]Discovers in July. If you know the He Wears It series, you will want to read this feature and get to know him more as a graphic designer.

As for Swide, we continue to have some cool artists to feature over there and for this month, we have fashion product photographer Massimo Gammacurta, fashion photographer Ben Cornford and duo AORTA, fashion illustrator Achraf Amiri, and surrealism artist Gary Fernández.

August is approaching and we can finally announce the beginning of I Scream Awards 2011! Stay tuned!

Ray of Inspirology: In Dark Dream

I love this set a lot!

This editorial is shot by Matthew Lyn featuring Frédérique. The whole shoot has a very strong Tim Burton's movie vibe and the black and white treatment is making the images very gloomy and dark. It's very refreshing and it seems like the photos do have the magic to suck you into this fashion story. What do you think?

Trendology: Junya Watanabe Grey Wool Jacket

My dream item has arrived at Colette!

This jacket is from Junya Watanabe's latest collection. What I like the most is how Junya adds the knitted pattern on a sweater to this jacket. It looks very refreshing and I am sure whoever is going to wear this will instantly become the attention of the night. If you want to purchase it, you can click here.

Ray of Inspirology: Emporio Armani F/W 2011 Menswear Promotion Campaign

This is one amazing campaign you cannot miss!

Mario Sorrenti is the photographer for this season's Emporio Armani promotion campaign and for the menswear portion, we have Simon Nessman. I really enjoy the fluorescent lights in the images and also the composition is flawless here. I would hope to have this series in posters and hang them in my room. Tomorrow I am going to show you the women's campaign (as good as this one!).

Ray of Inspirology: How To Wear Your ABC

How much do you know about your fashion ABC for this coming season? Well, Glamour Magazine has an answer for you.

In the latest issue of Glamour, Walter Chin has shot an amazing editorial with the styling by Charlotte-Anne Fidler. The lighting of the series is pretty simple and the simple background helps to make the clothes stand out. My personal favorite image in this series is the Emporio Armani one (that hush puppy is adorable!). What do you think?

Graphicology: Victorior's Imagination World

Once awhile, I will come across some amazing illustrations that will bright up my day and today, I discovered this artist.

Based in Thailand, Wanchana Intrasombat "Victorior" has created some cool illustrations that have melted my heart. The works will bring you back to your childhood memories because they are so pure and joyful. The following are some of my favorites and you can click here to see more of his works.

Wave of Inspiration: Jungle

It's irresistible not to talk about this amazing talent!

Recently I came across this song (thanks to Ben!) and I have been repeating this song ever since. I am totally addicted to Emma Louise's voice and the melody is just so haunting, yet beautiful at the same time. This song helps me to increase my creativity cells. Love it!

Wave of Inspiration: Muta

Miu Miu continues the Women's Tales series with this short film directed by Lucrecia Martel. The clothes in this film are from the F/W 2011 collection and I think they fit the setting very well. The film has a very vintage, retro vibe and the robotic gestures from the models are making the whole storyline very mysterious. Even though I cannot say I understand the story fully but somehow I have to admit, it is very addictive. Do take a few minutes to check this video out when you have time.

[Un]Discover: Chinedesign by Chinedu Ukabam

Dubai. Nigeria. Canada. Paris. Marrakech. Those are just a few of the locales that U.K.-born, Nigerian-raised, Paris-educated and Toronto-based designer Chinedu Ukabam draws from for inspiration for his clothing line Chinedesign. The label, which started out as a few T-shirts to promote his music (one of the many hats Chinedu wears is the Kangol hat of an emcee and producer), has grown into a full menswear and womenswear line that embraces world cultures to the fullest.

Ukabam has recently expanded the Chinedesign empire to include the SUPAFRIK concept pop-up shop (Hotshot, 181 Augusta Avenue, Toronto) which celebrates and explores contemporary urban Africa through fashion, art and music. While the last day to visit the shop and pick up your Chinedesign gear is this Sunday, July 31 the closing night party offers customers a chance to create their own one-of-a-kind Chinedesigns. Ukabam will be opening up the archive vault and allowing customers to bring in an item to personalize or choose from a Chinedesign T-shirt or tote.

In between manning his Kensignton Market pop-up shop and working on his next Marrakech-inspired collection Ukabam chatted with me about life in Paris, his timeless view of fashion and the power of colour. Read the interview after the jump.

Trendology: Chao & Eero Jewel "Heart" Ring

One of my favorite jewelry brands, Chao & Eero Jewel has welcomed a new member to the signs collection and I am sure all of us will be in love with it.

After many requests from the customers, the designers have finally created this <3 ring! It is made of silver and if you are familiar with texting/instant messengers, you should be familiar with this love symbol. Once again, I like the design of the ring as it is simple and straight to the point. If you want to purchase it, you can go to their Facebook Fanpage and order it.

Fashionist[On The Go]: The Viva Glam Faces Are...

It's time to take a look at what I have found on The Fashionist this week!

MAC has recently announced the new faces for the Viva Glam line (goodbye Lady Gaga) and the chosen celebrities are Nicki Minaj and Ricky Martin. This is a slightly unusual combination but what I am looking forward the most is the ad campaign shot by David La Chapelle! [Read Here]

The crazy barbie doll meets one of the hottest male singer on Earth, this will be interesting. (source: The Fashionist)

If you are going to be in London these few months (till October 3rd), then may I suggest you to pay a visit to Buckingham Palace? From now till October 3rd, Kate Middleton's Alexander McQueen wedding gown will be on display inside the Palace (and the accessories as well). Too bad I have no plan to go to London right now... [Read Here]

Such a beautiful gown! (source: The Fashionist)

See you next week here on The Fashionist [On The Go] again!

Funkology: Star Wars x Moleskine Notebooks

Cue the Star Wars theme music...

After collaborating with Snoopy, Little Prince and Pac-man, Moleskine has finally teamed up with one of my favorite science fiction movies - Star Wars! This limited edition series will consist of line page and blank page notebook in 2 sizes. I think I want the Dark Vader one...

[Un]Discover: Rachel Sin

It’s always a pleasant change to meet a designer who has interests outside of fashion. While a passion bordering on obsession is needed to make it in such a demanding, fast-paced industry being able to shift gears and remove yourself from the madness is also necessary. Canadian designer Rachel Sin is the embodiment of that duality. Architect extraordinaire by day (Sin has earned a Master’s degree in Architecture from Carleton University) and fashion designer by night the Hawaiian-born, Toronto raised designer is the talent behind the self-titled label Rachel Sin.

The go-getter woman who is perpetually on the go managed to extricate herself from her her whirlwind schedule (she was in the middle of preparing for the Ukamaku Closet Sale) to answer some questions about balancing architecture with fashion, Canadian designer collaborations and her new Model Off Duty collection. Check out the interview after the jump.

Trendology: Dimitris Petrou Theros Womenswear Collection

Yesterday I have shown you Dimitris Petrou's S/S 2011 menswear collection and now it is time to show you the womenswear. According to my knowledge, this is probably Dimitris' first women collection and I enjoy it a lot! The color palette is the same as the menswear to make the collection cohesive and again, the details on the clothes are very amazing. My eyes is definitely on the baby blue pattern gown. What do you think?

Trendology: Dimitris Petrou Theros Menswear Collection

I know summer has already arrived a month ago but that does not mean I am not going to show you a fabulous S/S collection, especially it is from a designer I truly admire.

Dimitris Petrou named the S/S collection as Theros (summer in Greek) and the colors he uses include brown, navy blue, and light blue. I also like the pattern he uses as it gives a Greek cultural kick to the collection. I always enjoy the details in Dimitris' collection and this time it is no exception. Today I am going to show you the menswear and come back tomorrow to see the womenswear from this collection.

Ray of Inspirology: +J F/W Promotion Campaign

This season may probably be the last collaboration between Jil Sander and Uniqlo and recently the promotion campaign has been released on the web. The shots are photographed by David Sims and the models are Bastiaan Van Gaalen and Arizona Muse. Just like the previous campaigns, the images here are clean and simple and they fit well with the design of Jil Sander (minimalism). Are you excited about this collection after seeing the photos?

[Burberry] Rhythm: The Daydream Club - "In The Arms Of Another Day"

It's always refreshing to listen to Burberry Acoustic and this time Christopher Bailey has put The Daydream Club in the spotlight. The song is very mellow and refreshing and it somehow reminds me of spring all over again.

I think this song will give you some stress relief if you are having a crazy day today.

Ray of Inspirology: Magnum Art

I am sure a lot of people must have heard of Magnum ice cream and today, I want to show you the new campaign of this ice cream brand.

This campaign is created by Diver and Aguilar and the composed images are shot by a high speed camera. I really enjoy seeing the explosion of the ice cream as it has turned into some kind of beautiful abstract artwork (a combination of photography and graphic enhancement). The campaign is truly refreshing and it does attract consumers to buy this product. What do you think?

You can see more images from this campaign here.

Trendology: Romain Jerome Space Invaders Watch

This surely brings back some of my childhood memories...

Romain Jerome, a watch maker brand based in Switzerland, has teamed up with TAITO Corporation to create a limited collection watch series based on the retro game Space Invaders. If you were born in the 70s and 80s, you should be very familiar with this game and the pixelated graphic on the watch is absolutely amazing! This watch comes in 2 version (color and black & white) and for more information, you can click here. Did I mention each version only comes in 78 pieces?

Now I just want this bad!!

Ray of Inspirology: The Boeing Girl

Pedro Matos is probably one of my latest favorite photographers and with the release of the latest issue of The Draft Mag (the future issue), this amazing photographer has shot a few cool editorials for it. Today, I am going show you my top favorite one from this issue.

The title of this editorial is called The Boeing Girl and as you can expect, aircraft element can be seen through out the series. I really like the color and the slightly overexposure treatment on the images. These 2 elements have made Anastacia to look like a an alien and the whole vibe of this set is very futuristic and edgy. Here is more information about this shoot.

Styling: João Ribeiro

Ray of Inspirology: Mulholland Dr.

Simple. Elegant. Edgy.

I recently came across this editorial and instantly fell in love with it. It was shot by Kevin Sinclair, who is also the founder of Vestal Magazine. The styling, makeup and hair on model Valeria Dmitrienko was superb and the lighting for this shoot helped to create a strong female image of Valeria. The garments Alex Van Der Streen pulled for this shoot were refreshing and these pieces were not something you would see in a print magazine. What a stunning editorial!

Here is more information about the shoot:
Photographer: Kevin Sinclair
Fashion Editor: Alex Van Der Steen
Assistant Stylist: Jason Tompkins
Model: Valeria Dmitrienko
Hair: Michael Silva
Makeup: Sylwia Rakowska

Wave of Inspiration: Hazel

A fashion film on hair? You bet, and I think it is brilliant!

In order to showcase the hair trend of this coming F/W season, Hair on the Avenue has teamed up with Peter Tamlin to present a very dark and seductive fashion short film. The story takes place in the Hazelton Hotel and it is partly inspired by the famous Britney moment. I really like the art direction of this film and the hair styles are great! I do recommend you to take 3 minutes to absorb this amazing artistic short film.

Art[s]ense: Gary Fernández

Do you like abstract illustrations? If so, you will love this feature!

Recently I have discovered Gary Fernández's works while browsing through some online galleries and I am totally addicted to his imagination world. The images are very whimsical, but at the same time there is always a twist to it. This week, I am happy to feature this amazing illustrator on Swide. Please click here to read the feature.

Ray of Inspirology: Louis Vuitton F/W 2011 Promotion Campaign Wave 2

Here is the wave 2 of  Louis Vuitton F/W promotion campaign!

The newly released campaign includes models Fei Fei Sun, Nyasha Matonhodze and Gertrud Hegelund. Once again, the campaign is shot by Steven Meisel and the whole set is full of Hollywood classic movie vibe. The campaign is simply classy and elegant. I think this campaign will be one of the classic ads for this fashion house. What do you think?

Ray of Inspirology: Tribes of Autumn

And so the F/W editorial beings...

In the latest issue of VMAN, Matt H, Tomek, Max B and Jacques are shot by Ryan Michael Kelly to showcase the iconic menswear pieces for this season. Every image does have its flavor but if I have to choose my top favorite 3 images from this set, the winners will be D&G, Jil Sander and Thom Browne. Props to Jessica Bobince for making the models look so fresh with her flawless styling skill. What do you think?

Trendology: Kris Van Assche x Eastpak Garment Duffle Bag

The wait is over! The collaboration collection between Kris Van Assche and Easkpak has finally landed SSENSE and this Duffle bag is what caught my eyes the most. I like the size of the bag (it can turn into a garment bag too!) and also the color combination. Also, the leather trim has given the bag a luxurious touch which sets it apart from the other Eastpak collections. If you want to purchase it (is a good deal!), you can click here.

Ray of Inspirology: The Business of Being Paris

I could never imagine Paris Hilton could look like this. My jaw just dropped.

In the latest issue of V Magazine, the dynamic photography duo Daniele + Iango has shot a black and white series featuring Paris Hilton. When I first looked at the photos, I could not recognize Paris Hilton at all since she looked so different here. The shots are very powerful and classy and if this is the new transformation of Paris, I would totally love to keep an eye on her on my radar. What do you think?

You can read the interview here.

Trendology: Self Made Moustache Bowties

Moustache can turn into an amazing men's accessory? You bet!

Recently I came across this video and after that I could not resist but to take a look at the Self Made site. These 3 moustache style bowties come in 3 version (snakeskin leather, felt and brown leather and more to come) and I think they are very fun to wear. At this moment I am still collecting interesting ties and bowties so I have put this on my wish list instantly. What do you think? Did I tell you they are based in Montreal? Now, it's time to go support the Canadian fashion.

If you want to purchase this item, you can click here.
