January 2012 Memories

We can't believe January has gone by that quick as we are still warming up for this year. For this year, we are going to be more concentrated on the quality than the quantity of posts so you should start to realize we have cut back the number of entries in the weekends. However, this does not mean we are not working hard. In fact, because we have raised our bar, we have to spend more time to look for amazing things to share with you. Anyway, let's take a look at what we have done in this month.

[Un]Discovers is back and this month we have 2 amazing artists. First, we have a body art painter from Los Angeles and her name is Nelly Recchia. Then we have a great illustrator whose works consists of beautiful figures and abstract geometric patterns. Her name is Tran Nguyen.

We have started a new section called Time[less] and as you can probably guess, it is all about watches. Well Marcus is very passionate about watches so this section is about complicated and rare watches. At least this is an item we can always dream of owning in the future.

As for Swide, we are very happy to finally show you the project we had curated back in 2011. Few months ago, we asked a few of our illustrator friends to illustrate the S/S 2012 Dolce & Gabbana collection and here is the part 1 of it. Also, for the first time, we had an interview with a super male model and if you want to know who he is, you will have to click here to find it out!

This year, our mission is to evolve and continue to push the envelop, so stay tuned and see what we will have in store for you.

Trendology: United Nudes S/S 2012 Collection

Season after season, I have been amazed by United Nude shoes and am lucky enough to own a pair of Hollow dress shoes.

For the S/S 2012 season, the collection is getting very colourful and i am in love with some of the new designs. The Web Hi will be a good statement piece, so is the Crazy Lacy. As for the men, I am really hoping to get a pair of purple or pink desert boots. The design is simple but I love the colour selection for this particular design. Well if you want some funky shoes for this season, I recommend you to head to United Nude website or flagship stores before they are all sold out.

Wave of Inspirology: Louis Vuitton Little Groom Adventure

Louis Vuitton has just opened its first Louis Vuitton Maison in Italy and it is housed in Rome's oldest cinema. In order to celebrate this event, the fashion house has commissioned Maneki Lab to produce 2 short animations and I am in love with them. They are fun, whimsical and romantic at the same time. Also, look closely to see the appearance of the monograms (it's very subtle, but is an cool element to let everyone know these movies are made by this famous fashion house).

Director: Régis Raffin

Ray of Inspirology: Valentino S/S 2012 Campaign

Deborah Turbeville has shot quite an amazing campaign for Valentino.

This campaign features Bette Franke, Fei Fei Sun, Maud Welzen, Zuzanna Bijoch, Clement Chabernaud and I have to admit, it took me sometime to be fully absorbed by this campaign. The images are very peaceful and I feel like I am walking in a dream. The composition is great and the setting is making everything so dreamy. At this moment, I just cannot get enough this amazing series.

Trendology: Stella McCartney Hawaiian Print Scarf

Ever since last S/S collection, I have been eyeing for Stella McCartney's prints. This time around, instead of using fruits, Hawaiian inspired graphic is used for the pre spring collection. I specifically choose this scarf to talk about because scarf is supposed to have wonderful prints and at the same time, you will not feel like you have too much graphics going on on your body.

If you are hoping spring to come sooner, I recommend you to get this item and imagine wearing it on a beach. Oh, fantastic!

Trendology: Z E M F/W 2012 Collection - DUSK

Z E M has just released the look book photos for the F/W 2012 season and there are some nice pieces! The whole collection is all about 2 tone pieces and I like the colour combination a lot. Some pieces that have caught my eyes include the burgundy + grey shirt, grey + white shirt, burgundy + grey pants. Out of the entire collection, the light brown + tweed coat is probably my favourite.

You can click here to see the complete collection.

Ray of Inspirology: Aeroflot 2012

I have a feeling Andrey & Lili must been somehow inspired by the Pan Am TV show when doing this shoot.

This editorial is about the flight attendants and I rarely see this kind of concept in a photo shoot. As usual, the styling and composition are flawless and the vintage photo processing style is adding an edge to the series. The girls look very elegant here and after looking at this editorial, I have an urge to ride on a plane.

Trendology: Alexander McQueen Pre Fall 2012 Collection

I think this could possibly the freshest Alexander McQueen pre fall collection I have seen for awhile. Floral is the major element in this collection and you can see it in both prints and embroidery. I am mesmerized by the Burgundy series and I love how Sarah Burton has kept the Victoria style but create a softer silhouette for this collection. Of course, the highlight of this collection are the sheer gowns which I cannot stop looking them. They look very dreamy, light and elegant. Once again, Burton has aced this collection and this should build up the excitement for the F/W collection.

Ray of Inspirology: Chanel S/S 2012 Promotion Campaign

At first glance, I was not really into this campaign. Then, the below Joan Smalls image blew my mind. Now, I am in love with this campaign.

This series is shot by Karl Lagerfeld and Joan Smalls and Saskia de Brauw are styled by Carine Roitfeld. I really like the black and white approach as it shows the classiness of the collection. As you should remember, this collection is inspired by the sea so it is not hard to understand why Lagerfeld chooses the sea as the setting. What do you think?

Graphicology: All You Need it Universe!

I am fascinated by this illustrator's creativity!

The series below is illustrated by Eibatova Karina, an illustrator based in Russia. What I like about it is she uses the universe element and applies it on her art works. The melting clock and the universe drink are two of my favourites. Please click here to see more of the images from this series.

Ray of Inspirology: Singular Sensations

If I haven't noticed yet, I am a big fan of Andrew Yee's works. His recent editorial featured in How To Spend It has really blown my mind.

This series is styled by Damian Foxe (big props) and the model is Nina Porter. From styling to composition, every image is breathtaking and honestly, I could see this editorial featured in Vogue. Now may I suggest all of you to have Andrew Yee on your fashion photography radar?

Walk the Walk: Valentino S/S 2012 Haute Couture Collection

Floral prints rule the runway room!

For this season, Valention is all about floral prints, lace and sheer materials. The purpose of these materials is to make sure the girls look elegant, classy and beautiful. The silhouette is very soft and because of the lace and sheer material, the clothes look very airy as well. Of course, one of the highlights is the crystallized champagne colour gown, which I could see someone wearing it as the wedding gown or wedding party outfit (I think The Hector will agree on this). What do you think of this collection?

Pros:
- I cannot stop loving the floral prints for this season, they are so beautiful.
- I like the silhouette, it is so soft and transform every girl into a goddess.
- Love the use of sheer material, this makes the pieces to look light and airy.
- The crystallized gown could be a wonderful wedding party outfit.

Cons:
- Compare to the clothes, the shoes are not too appealing.

Eye Candies:
- Flora print strapless gown
- Sheer sleeves dress
- White lace sleeves suit
- Champagne crystallized gown

Trendology: Yves Saint Laurent Derby Shoes

Let's take a classic style and give it a twist!

From the S/S 2012 collection, this pair of Yves Saint Laurent derby is on my wish list at the moment. What I like about is the burgundy and brown tone and also the transparent rubber sole. Pair this with dark jeans should complete the cool street look. You can click here for more information.

Walk the Walk: Stephane Rolland S/S 2012 Haute Couture Collection

Finally, there is a grand Haute Couture collection that I truly enjoy! Thanks Stephane Rolland!

The colour palette for this collection is red, white, black and a splash of yellow. The gold hardwares really shine in this collection especially the gold belt and the gold studs on one of the jackets. These 37 looks from Stephane have everything you need form a Couture collection: ruffle, pleats, dramatic shapes and over the top gowns. Overall, it is very cohesive collection, mainly because of the colour palette that helps to pull everything together.

Pros:
- The colour palette is very refreshing, the blood red is really making a statement here.
- Love where Stephane applies the pleats and ruffles on the pieces. These elements make the outfits so pretty and elegant.
- I really love the gold hardwares and the gloves, they go well with the collection.
- I like the ruffle flower a lot, just so romantic!

Cons:
- I really think there is something wrong with look 23. It looks like as if the girl cannot pull the dress up.

Eye Candies:
- The blood red gown
- White to red fringe gown
- White jacket with gold studs
- The gloves

Fashionist[On The Go]: I am seeing Red!

This week, I have found 2 interesting stories to share with you.

If you are a fashion lover, you should know this past Monday to Thursday were the Haute Couture week and while I am still very disappointed on a lot of the shows, Stephane Rolland has continued to blow my mind with his amazing collection. The finale of this show was definitely a major highlight by having Yasmin Le Bon in a 110 pounds gown walking down the runway. Well, if I were at the show, my jaw might probably drop down to the floor. [Read Here]

Yep, I am seeing RED here... (source: the Fashionist)

If you are a Glee fan, you should be happy to know the new Lea Michele for Candie's campaign is out! The images are shot by Yu Tsai and they are very whimsical and sweet, just like the brand's image. Well, I think Lea is a good choice for this brand as the teenagers are probably crazy over the Glee show right now. [Read Here]

I will not be surprised to see a lot of girls using these ads as inspiration for this season. (source: the Fashionist)

And yes, read the MOST EXPENSIVE t-shirt on Earth here. My jaw dropped when I read that news. For real?

See you next week!

Walk the Walk: Chanel Haute Couture S/S 2012 Collection

It looks like all Haute Couture fashion houses are affected by the economic crisis so rather than the dramatic outfits, the designers are actually going for a more ready to wear collection.

Dramatic is never the word for Chanel Haute Couture, but instead, elegant and classy are what I can describe this fashion house's collection from season to season. This time, Karl is taking inspiration from the flight attendants and create some really interesting "costumes" for the Chanel girls. The outfits range from the 80s classics to the futuristic era. One thing I really like about this collection is the design of the collar. This particular design is making the girl looks stronger, and sharper.

If the flight attendants are going to wear something like this in the future, I am sure a lot of fashion lovers will want to board on this company's plane. Chanel, let's make this happen.

Pros:
- I really like the colour palette: white, black and different shades of blue.
- The collar design is great, and also the puff sleeves design is very interesting.
- The reflective material (patent leather I assume?) is injecting the futuristic element to the collection.
- I will neve get tired of Chanel's presentation, this is another great show.

Cons:
- The shoes are not appealing at all. I thought Karl would do something that trump the "torch" shoes from last season.

Eye Candies:
- The gradient suit
- The sharp collar black one piece dress
- Black puff sleeves dress

Ray of Inspirology: The Collections on IVC

Steven Meisel has created a very nice editorial for the January issue of Vogue Italia.

This editorial features models include Sigrid Agren, Gertrud Hegelund, Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss, Caroline Trentini, Daria Strokous and Natasha Poly. I really like the shopping television concept and seeing all those models dressed up in high fashion pieces in this setting is very refreshing. What do you think?

Ray of Inspirology: Body Art

Besides the pastel colour palette, this season is all about bold wild prints.

This editorial is shot by Greg Kadel for the latest issue of Vogue Germany. Carola Remer is styled by Nicola Knels and Lynn Schmidt and I have to say, she look so good and trendy. This editorial serves a very good example of how to mix the prints together to create your own identity. The best way to look good in prints is to mix the bold ones (in opposite colour spectrum) together . I find this fascinating and would love to learn the colour theory once again.

What do you think?

Walk the Walk: Thom Browne F/W 2012 Menswear Collection

It's about the fight between punks and jocks, and my pick is...

Thom Browne once again shows a very interesting runway show on the last day of Paris Fashion Week and the theme this time is Punks vs Jocks. For the punks part, Browne applies studs on the slim silhouette (is way slimmer than what he has designed before) which I think is very refreshing. As for the jocks, everything is oversized and makes every model to look like a comic character on the runway. Also, the introduction of skirt to the jocks is really making a statement to the world (seriously, have you ever thought a jock will wear skirt?) I think this is the most wearable runway collection I have seen from this brand and if Browne can show the audience the normal size of those jock pieces, I am sure this collection will be selling like hot cakes.

So, my pick is... the punks. What's yours?

Pros:
- I like the jocks vs punks concept. Everything is very true to the brand but with studs and shoulder pads have made this collection special.
- Throwing in the Fair Isle pattern into this collection is truly refreshing. I love the colour on those pieces too!
- The accessories are actually very amazing, I really like the school bags.
- As always, Thom Browne runway show is always fun to watch.

Cons:
- The one short one long pants does not really work for me, I hope this is just for styling purpose.

Eye Candies:
- The grey studded blazer
- The Fair Isle pattern suit
- Blue/white varsity jacket

Ray of Inspirology: Jewellery Shoot by Simon Proceter

Recently I have been experimenting with the inverted style photography. I am happy to see Simon Procter is doing the same thing and below is a wonderful editorial for inspiration.

This series is featured in the Stiletto Magazine Paris and I love the monotone of it. It is amazing to see Procter capturing the stunning expressions of the models and the inverted style has created a haunted mood for entire series. Of course, how can I not like the jewellery pieces here?

Here is more information about the shoot:

Models: Ilva Hietmann@ Women and Paula B @ FORD
Stylist: Franceline Pratt
Hair: Cyril Laloue
Maquillage: Elsa Durdens

Time[less]: Jacob & Co Cyclone

I love big and thick watch and this is partly the reason I am in love with this Jacob & Co watch. Of course, this watch has  a very magical touch or else it would never be on my wish list.

The watch case is made of 18K rose and white gold and I love the abstract design. It somehow reminds me of Salvador Dali's works. Then here comes the best part, instead of having the automatic rotor at the back of the watch, it is on the front and better yet, a tourbillon is mounted on it.

Other than the time indicator, there is also a power reserve indicator which tells you how many hours of power reserve this watch has (it can reserve up to 45 hours). Also, it is water resistant for up to 30meters. I am amazed by the design of this watch and really hope to see it in real life sometime!

Price tag for this art piece? $300,000. Click here for more detail.

Walk the Walk: Dior Homme F/W 2012 Collection

After taking few seasons to warm up, Kris Van Assche finally delivers a stunning Dior Homme collection that is very refreshing and bold. This collection also defines what a new Dior man should look like.

From colours to silhouette, this collection is taken inspiration from military wear. I really like the military green and also a touch of silver on some of the pieces. Also, the birds print is very bold and daring and I actually did not expect Kris would experiment this with a Dior Homme collection. The suits and trench coats are well tailored and the loose fit capes are going to be an item every Dior fan will want to own. Overall, I think this is probably the best collection Kris Van Assche has ever created for Dior Homme and I am happy to see how he is going to take this direction for the next season. Bravo!

Pros:
- The collection is very solid and cohesive. I love how the military green dominates the entire collection
- I really like the fitting of the suits and jackets. They are not exactly slim fit, but they sit very well on your body to make you look bold and confident.
- The birds print is a very big surprise and I am impressed with those few pieces
- The mixed material trench coats and the plain colour capes are clearly something all Dior Homme fans will want to own.

Cons:
- I am surprised there is only 1 bag in this runway presentation. I hope there will be some military inspired pieces.

Eye Candies:
- Grenn/silver trench coat
- Bird print jacket
- Military green suit
- Capes

Artology: Greg Peltz's Star Wars Portraits

I am always fascinated by the artistic skills Star Wars fans have and this series is really beautiful!

These Victorian Star Wars portraits are created by Greg Peltz and my favourites are C-3PO and R2-D2. These are all limited prints so I have a feeling they will be very valuable if they are all sold out. You can now purchase them at Kult Studio and ACME Archives Direct. Get them fast!

Walk the Walk: Walter Van Beirendonck F/W 2012 Menswear Collection

It's always fun to see Walter Van Beirendonck's collection because it is always so colourful and playful. For this season, Walter takes inspiration from the tribes as you can see this on the pink masks. What I really like about is the outfit in outfit illustration. For the first half of the shows, you can see a graphic print inside a suit to create a slimmer version of that person. The result very cartoonish but it also helps to stand out from the crowd. Question is, where will I be able to obtain some pieces from this collection?

Pros:
- Love the suit illustration style, very brilliant and fun.
- The mask is definitely making a statement here and you will have to interpret the meaning yourself. (It's provoking)
- The tribal sweater is fun to wear.
- Always a good thing to see so many colourful pieces in a menswear collection

Cons:
- Not a big fan of the fur nail gloves

Eye Candies:
- Checked/graphic print suit
- Yellow/purple suit
- Tribal sweater
- Checked/pink suit
- Colourful shoes

Please click here to see the complete collection.

Walk the Walk: Yves Saint Laurent F/W 2012 Menswear Collection

While everyone is still praising the Jil Sander F/W collection, my eyes, however, are on this amazing YSL collection.

This collection is about monotone and the use of leather. Every piece is very sharp in design and I am in love with leather details on the suits. Also, the metal straps on the shoes are clearly making a bold and futuristic statement which I love it a lot. If you are looking for a monotone collection with a modern twist, then you should put this on your radar!

Pros:
- Love the leather details on the pieces. Very classy.
- The cutting is sharp and slim, which really suits my body type.
- I like the leather strap design on some of the pieces.
- Make sure you take a look at the shoes, the metal strap design is nice.

Cons:
- Not too sure what is the purpose for the razor blade print, it does not really belong to this collection.

Eye Candies:
- The black suit with leather lapel
- Vest with leather strap
- metal strap shoes

Walk the Walk: Ann Demeulemeester F/W 2012 Menswear Collection

Ann Demeulemeester is always one of the collections I have my eyes on every Paris Fashion Week and this time, she is all about washed out degrading colours.

As usual, her collection is all about layering and it is always a given to see oversized jersey shirts to be part of it. What I really like this time is the degrading colours and also the metallic blue. These colours give a new life to Ann's pieces and also make them look very futuristic and edgy. Clearly, this collection will not be able to fit everyone (unless you are very tall and lean), but if you appreciate something different than regular suits for men, Ann's option will be something for you to consider next season.

Pros:
- I like the degrading colours idea, especially the geometric ones.
- The boots are something we should all keep an eye on this coming season.
- The metallic blue series is pretty fantastic.
- As usual, Ann's collection is all about layering and there are a lot of inspirations from this show.

Cons:
The turtleneck one piece is really not my cup of tea.

Eye Candies:
- The degrading rectangular colour blocks jacket
- Metallic blue blazer
- Boots
