[Un]Discovers: Blank Label

Toronto Fashion Week has begun and as the O Factor month continues, we are going to feature another brand here.

We have recently come across a clothing website called Blank Label (thanks to the power of twitter!) and what they are doing have totally caught our eyes. We have come across many design your own t-shirt sites but now this company is raising the game by letting you design your own dress shirt. We are so glad that we can get in touch with Danny, one of the owners for this company and he answers some of the questions we have for him.

Hey Danny, so how did you come up with this concept? Did you get the idea from those t-shirts site?
We came up with the idea of Blank Label after originally being a custom suit and dress shirt company. We were the typical custom tailor, but that wasn't scalable because we had to hire a lot of salespeople who turned out to be our weakest asset (good people are hard to find). But we were inspired by other custom companies like SpreadShirt, LaudiVidni (custom handbags) and SoleEnvie (custom women's shoes). We thought custom men's dress shirts would solve the problems with mass-production (for dress shirt wearers) and that it was more scalable because we could build our business online.

We think this is a great idea for producing the design yourself men's shirts! Well, for those people who do not have a clue how this website works, do you mind to explain the steps here (and maybe give them some tips on the mix and match steps)?
Well first, you start by picking the base fabric of your shirt, and then you add all the fun details! You can add accents (lining) to the collar and cuff, or be a bit more daring and make your collar and cuff contrast the shirt with any color or pattern (i.e. you can have a blue shirt with a red/white striped collar and cuff). You can also customize the placket to contrast the base. Then you decide if you want to add shoulder straps (epaulets) or shoulder loops (double strips) and you can contrast those too. Add a pocket or two and customize their fabric, then add some color to your buttons. You can also add a custom monogram, or you can customize your shirt's own LABEL, your shirt can read, "Joe's Label" or "Danny's Label."
Then you can tell us your body type, normal standard size and your fit preferences to get a fit you need - without the measurements.

That sounds easy enough for us and we are sure our readers will want to try it now! Out of all the shirts you have seen people created on the web, is there any design that has totally popped your eyes out?
Nothing too crazy. People generally create pretty awesome shirts. Our customers seem to have good taste.

We have noticed that there is no women's dress shirts on your site yet. Are you going to have this line in the future?
We have thought about doing women's clothing but our fairest response is, "We're four guys." But there certainly is a great demand for a solution to mass-produced women's dress shirts. Hopefully someone will come out with custom women's dress shirts so we can team up to change the dress shirt industry!

We just love your attitude! All right, let's stick to men's shirts for now! Since we are based in Toronto, we do have a question. At this moment Blank Label shirts can only ship to the States, is the company planning to go global in the future?
We are going to be shipping internationally very soon. We just need to set up our system to process international orders. =)
*Note: By the time this interview is out, they are shipping to everywhere in the world now! EXCITING!

Now we cannot wait to get our shirts! Finally, other than dress shirts, are you planning to launch another product line in the future?
We do not have plans in the near future to expand our apparel offering. But if we were to expand our offering, we might look into jeans, pants, or suits (again).

There you have it! We are sure you will want to go to their website and order your one of a kind shirt now. Thanks Danny for taking his time to answer our questions and make sure you follow them on twitter as well! All photos in this entry are courtesy of Blank Label
