[Un]Discovers: Hugo Arias

Hugo Arias, an illustrator I have met back in October 2009 during my first exhibit in Sleeping Giant Gallery. If you have met him and seen his works, I am sure you will be like me: your eyes will pop out from your head!

Hugo is going to have a solo exhibit coming soon (April 22 is the opening night) and today I am lucky to have him as a feature on this blog. Make sure you read the answers word by word because they will make your day brighter (time to have some humor in your life!).

Hey Hugo, thanks so much for taking your time to do an interview with me. Well, when you were small, were you hoping to be an illustrator one day? If not, what made you change your mind to become an illustrator?
I recall wanting to be an astronaut. to go where no one has gone before! not that i was ever a sci-fi nerd, i just liked the idea of venturing into the unknown and hanging out with aliens and whatnot. somewhere along the lines that bubble exploded... leaving me drawing on every surface i could find, not really thinking of what the future held. i just do what comes naturally. sadly that does not include zero gravity.

Astronaut sounds great to me, but I have never thought of traveling that far. What/who have influenced your graphic style? Do you consider your style as unique?
Everything i see and have ever seen has in some part affected my style and approach to whatever it is i do. to be specific though i would say that i am heavily influenced by Saturday morning cartoons and comic books, later adding in influence from tattoo designs, graffiti and all that good stuff. i would say im pretty gosh darn unique, but i suppose originality in the visual world only lasts so long. much like buying a new hat and then noticing that everyone else is suddenly wearing the same hat. this is why is it imperative to be a man of many hats.

To me, I think your style is unique because I haven't seen a lot of people with this kind of drawing skill. Well, which art piece gave you your break? What did it bring you afterwards?
My break? i don't think i've had any such breaks. i only get mini breaks in between reps. every now and then i try something new and start down a new path with newfound energy.

I have faith in you and I believe the best is yet to come! I know you have done some exhibits before, which one is your favorite and why?
Favorite is a very strong word.i don't think i have one, i do however regard the Hybridization Exhibit that i was a part of back in the day in Xpace as the most memorable. it was the first show i was a part of that had my name on the roster. it was my first "real show", that suggested the possibility of there being something to this art thing.

First show is always memorable (that means I still have remember the show I did last year). Your drawing style does have a comic element in it. If you need to re-design a super hero in the comic world, who will you choose and why?
I gave this question a lot of thought... and decided that i simply couldn't re-design a superhero. i'm a sucker for the iconic costumes and stories. the villains on the other hand are designed with flaws in mind, allowing much space for improvement! for starters i would tackle classis Spiderman villains such as Mysterio and the Shocker, and then... the world!!

I thought you would re-design Joker but Mysterio is not a bad choice either. If you can collaborate with a street wear brand, which brand do you want to collaborate and what kind of graphics you want to put on their products?
I imagine i would be a very difficult person to collaborate with, i get a bit power hungry and take over the whole project. as such i would have to start up my own brand. comprised of spandex body suits and printed tees.

------------------------------------
From what you have read so far, you may probably know Hugo is a very creative person. Now it is time to know him more. (I have a good laugh looking at these fun fact answers!)

Pencil or Pen?
Chances are you will never see me draw with a pencil. not that i don't like them but because they are so different, and in a way pencil lines are more personal. pencil is softer and allows for mistakes, whereas
pen is a one-time only deal. i always carry a pen with me, pencils are for studio use only.

Water color or acrylic?
Both. i pretty much use them the same way anyways. for now at least.

Black or Blue?
Black. i dislike writing or doing anything in blue. blue is for jeans and clear skies. i don't like blueberries at all either. blackberries on the other hand i find delicious. also i don't care for raspberries... i'm very picky at times.

Wii or PS 3?
The ultimate question!... for some. i'm not a huge gamer at all, i like games that i can put down and pick up whenever i feel like it. fun 2D scrolling games are ideal for me. i don't like war games at all. i'm not one to fall for the razzle dazzle of shooting down hundreds with an AK-47. the Wii is pretty good for fun games but Nintendo really dropped the ball as of late. i bought a PS3 over a Wii but still only play my SNES or SEGA Genesis.

Toronto or Montreal?
I am lame and as such have never been to Montreal. as such i choose Toronto. no brainer. i love the T-dot.

CNN or MTV?
YTV. or Teletoon. animated dramas beat reality tv and wiener teeny boppers any day. actually i don't watch much television. rots your brain you know.

Poison Ivy or Catwoman?
I can only assume you mean which one will be the mother of my children. i think Ivy will result in creepy children.... also Catwoman has all that PVC or whatever going for her. me-ow. final answer: Meghan Fox.

Ski or Snowboard?
Snow is only good for snowmen, and for winter Olympics...watching. dude i hate snow. end of story.

Hot dog or Hamburger?
Hamburger. you can't dress up a hotdog like you can a good burger. i mean you can try, but it usually ends up with a slice of pickle and mustard on my shirt.

Coffee or Tea?
Usually its coffee. double double. that is unless i am on one of my "i have to eat healthier!" kicks. in which case i opt for some green or chai tea. another factor in making this choice depends on what is accompanying it. is it a sandwich? what kind? cookie? cake? i enjoy my sugary treats... also sandwiches. really i just like to eat. but somedays nothing beats a cold glass of milk.

Interesting facts right? If you want to meet Hugo in person, make sure you mark down April 22 on your calender to see his solo exhibit show. Trust me, it is worth your time to come down to Sleeping Giant Gallery to see his show! Once again, thanks Hugo for taking his time to be on this feature entry!
