[Un]Discovers: Lisa Ng

I have been keeping an eye on Lisa Ng ever since the owner of Sleeping Giant Gallery shows me her works. Whenever I look at Lisa's works, I alway think about children books illustration; however, when you look closely, it is not the case. Her works always reflect the world we live in and I am amazed how she can come up with some of the concepts.

Recently, I have asked Lisa if she will be interested in answering my questions and for the people who are reading this right now, you are in luck to read some creative answers from her.

Maize

Hey Lisa, I want to know about this, do you consider yourself as a pop art artist? If not, what kind of artist do you consider yourself as?
Eye never really consider myself as a certain type of artist, like I don’t get up in the morning and think, “today I’m going to make THIS kind of art.” I just make whatever I think the universe could really use at that particular moment. Eye will say there are two kinds of art that really interest me at the moment (among others), they are pop surrealism, and conceptualism.

Split Ice Cream

Pop surrealism is cool and I like t hat too. Who/what has influenced your drawing style?
Who: Teachers, family, friends, pets, lots of insects, and other artists.
What: Compliments, the contour of things, cartoons, and my hand-I coordination.

Cat Painting

Well basically everything around you affect your drawing style so I guess you will never run out of ideas. Whenever I look at your paintings, I feel there are so many things going on at the same time. How did you manage to put all these things together?
I usually start with one thing, and then depending on the first thing, other things will come along with it. Sometimes there are only a few things, and other times it’s a whole bunch of things. The real trick, I thing, is the first thing, once that’s down, things just come into place. Tricky things to watch out for are the organization of things, and being sure not to acquire things just for the sake of acquiring things. Do this, and you’ll end up with too many things, none of which are any good.

Can't Sleep

Interesting work flow and now I should try that too. I also feel like there are hidden messages in your paintings. Do they actually have meanings to them?
I think so. Sometimes the meanings arr intentional, and sometimes they’re not. Sometimes I know what the meaning is, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes it beegins with won meaning, and then depending on how it integrates itself into the world, it morphs into another. I do wake up thinking the 8 x 10 painting I had been working on for a month, and thought it was finished too months ago, suddenly needs a picture of dental floss inn it. Despite work, school, chores, errands, a social life, I still manage to rearrange my day to input that one extra item in, know matter how tiny. Considering the great lengths I go through to due just that, two relieve myself of that mental image, I would hope that it makes a difference somehow. The act itself has definitely changed my life somehow.

I guess the meaning of your art works really depends the viewer's mood at the moment. Did you have a moment that you didn't feel like you were getting any inspirations? If so, what did you do in the end to get your momentum back?
Sure do. It’s just a passing phase. I'll step back and take a short break, do something to keep myself stimulated, something that wakes me up a little mentally, emotionally, ore physically. It can be things like looking up a knew fact, asking a question, looking into a flower, or going for a walk. I keep myself challenged, do only the things I really want to do, and don’t avoid things just because they’re hard.

Indigo

Last but not least, what kind of scene do you want to draw next and why?
The next seen I want to do depicts a picture of Canada. People have been wondering how being a Canadian affects my art. It’ll be interesting to see what Canadians think of it...
