[Un]Discovers: Alicia Calton

Alicia Calton, a photographer that I admire ever since I see her photography profile on model mayhem. Her photos always have that romantic essence and once you look at them, these images will forever stick in you mind. Today, I am so honored to feature her on this blog. Now, sit back and enjoy some wonderful photos and interview.

Hey Alicia, so what makes you want to become a fashion photographer? Are you planning to stick to this career forever?
Fashion is daring and bold, it has the ability to make grand statements about an individual through color, texture, patterns, and creative designs. With this being said, I adore combining the brilliancy of aesthetically pleasing fashion with photography. I tend to merge fashion and fantasy together, it’s the best of both worlds: fine art meets Vogue haha! I am planning to make this a career forever, if all goes as planned. I still have a few years of school left, I’m finishing up my BFA and I am hoping to get my MFA as well.

I really hope you will stick to this career path forever I am a big fan of your works right now. I am curious, who has influenced your photography skills?
Annie Leibovitz is my main inspiration, she is absolutely amazing. I looked at her work about a year after I started shooting, and I noticed that she tends to add in fantasy-like concepts to her work as well, and I believe that is why I am truly drawn to her work.

I like her works as well, especially her shoot for Disney World, that is breathtaking! I know I have to ask this, out of all the shoots you have done till this day, what is your most embarrassing moment? What happened?
Oh goodness I’m pretty sure the most embarrassing moment so far was a shoot with a model in a vine-field, I was holding the reflector, shooting, directing, and I did not realize that my foot was wrapped around a vine…so when I started walking I fell over. I will not lie, it was amazingly epic.

Wish there were photos to show the proof. As a fashion photographer, you must have a great sense of fashion. What will be your ideal womenswear and menswear for your photoshoot?
I find anything fantasy, gothic, or surreal like absolutely irresistible. Alexander McQueen’s designs would be perfection.

I could totally see you shooting a campaign for McQueen's style clothing. Out of all your works, which one you think can most represent you as a fashion photographer at the moment? Why?
I think of out of my most recent work, I would select the red dress image (clothing by Soreyda Benedit) worn by the ever so stunning Laura Kirkpatrick. The overall concept, model, location, and wardrobe is incredibly high fashion and reminds me of various Vogue Italia tearsheets.

Cool, I like that image too! Last but not least, if you could do a shoot with any models/celebrities in the world, who would you want to shoot? What kind of shoot would you want to do?
Either Scarlett Johansson or Kiera Knightley, I would love to do a gothic fairytale shoot with them, mainly because it would take them out of their main element and give them a more characteresque storybook appeal.

I do want to know if Alicia is still having that romantic character when she is not taking photos so I have asked her some random facts to reflect her true personality.
