[On]Air: Behind The Films In Bloom Film Festival

Few days ago, we have mentioned on June 29 (next Tuesday), Toronto is going to have a short film festival at Steam Whistle called Films In Bloom (here is the link for the previous post)Today, we are able to find Brad Tinmouth and Brendan Brady, the creator of this festival, for a brief interview and here are the questions we have for them.

Hi Brand and Brendan, we are just wondering, how did you guys come up with the Idea?
The idea was initially to screen a short film that Julian Hacquebard (former director) and I (Brendan) had made. I had also been talking to Steam Whistle (where I work part time) about a Steam Whistle film festival. We decided that it was best to merge the two ideas together and have it so that we could screen our film along with others to make it worth holding the event at Brewery. From there it went on to be a festival for emerging filmmakers like ourselves.

That's a very neat concept. So, is this something you want to do in the long run?
For sure! Along with the festival, Brad and I have been planning on creating smaller events where we showcase individual’s work. We actually did this a couple of months ago at Cinecycle and we had a great turn out. Right now we’re looking for Artists and other venues who would be interested in sponsoring us and we will go from there.

We are sure you two will have no problem finding the artists and venues for your smaller events since we know this Films in Bloom is going to be a great success! Do you plan on making this festival big in the future? Are you planning to include some independent films in the future?
Our long-term goal is to make FIB a multi-day event, with showcasing, conferences and workshops to offer emerging artist more information on where resources and funding are available. We would love to show feature length independent films; however, at this point we have not been able to offer that yet. It is our hope that in the next two years we will be able to find funding through grants.

We are looking forward to see this festival to go big in the future. Are you planning to make a statement in the film industry with this festival? If so, what is it?
If we told you it wouldn’t be a surprise, come and check out what we have to say.

Now we are curious on what kind of statement you two want to make. We know some people may not be able to make it for the festival this time and if that is the case, is there any way they can view those short films online?
It’s so easy to show people things online, but what we want to do is offer a professional environment for emerging young talent to an engaged and receptive crowd. We will be providing links to the filmmakers websites, blogs, etc, so people can find out more about these talented young filmmakers.

Providing the links will be a good idea but still, we do think going to see the films on that night will be must better. From your point of view, what do you think of the film industry in Toronto right now? What kind of things do you think the Toronto film industry are lacking at the moment?
Brendan- I think that there is a significant amount of very talented people in this city, as well as lots of funding and resources for those who really want to tell their story. There is not a lot of American stuff going on, but the amount of Canadian productions that are in various stages of development and completion is really exciting. Where I think it could have improvements is the emerging sector. There are so many kids coming out of film school these days and looking for jobs. I think instead of looking for jobs, we should be creating our own jobs. That’s what we’re hoping to convey at Films In Bloom.

Last but not least, do you have any advice for the people who want to submit their videos for next year's Films in Bloom?
We are looking for films and videos of all genres. You made it we want to see it. The one piece of advice we have is don’t be afraid to show your work. If your passionate about your art and what you do then you should want to show it.

Thank you so much to Brad Tinmouth and Brendan Brady for taking their time to answer our questions. If you need more information about this festival, you can visit their official site. Remember, the festival is on June 29 at 7pm and the location is Steam Whistle Brewery.
