[Un]Discovers: Artur Hilger

Sometime ago, I have posted an entry about the Intel Robots and I am sure a lot of you are in love with them. Recently, I have approached the brain behind this project, Artur Hilger and fortunately enough, he is willing to take time from his busy schedule to answer my questions. I like this Q&A section a lot because his answers are so raw and refreshing! Enjoy.

Artur, I am just curious here, how did you become an illustrator? What programs do you like to use to draw your illustrations?
I can’t remember how I "became" an illustrator. I was drawing ever since I can remember. My parents threw away most of the "comic books" I drew when I was  3 - 6 years old but fortunately, some of them are still with me. I have to admit I am good and sick-minded. My technique is a mix of 2D and 3D - I just need a vision and then the end justifies the means. As for the illustrations - the main tools I use are: Photoshop and Flash, though I have tested Corel’s Painter but still I am not very used to it. Maybe I’ll give it another try in the future.

I used to draw a lot when I was small and I don't even remember where is my own comics now. I am glad you still have some with you. Is there a specific subject you like to draw? If so, what is it?
I realize it’s a shallow description but I find fresh ideas as those I see behind closed eyes. The most enjoyable subjects for me are always from my imagination. I just don’t feel creative visualizing real-life objects. Also, there’s no specific subject I like to draw, but lately I caught myself loving the way that cute, alien creatures fit into every project. I can also tell you a secret that the subjects I don’t like to render are the portraits of women but don’t get me wrong, I love women, they’re beautiful, but they’re usually unhappy with "the way artist sees them”. We had some arguments over my latest project - "Superextra"but fortunately the final result was worth it.

I love your robots and I hope to see more of them from you in the future. If you need to use 3 adjectives to describe your collection of works, what words will you choose and why?
Unfinished - It’s not that I am never satisfied but I’m aware of there’s always something that can be done better and I think this is typical for a perfectionist. Being such a person, I have the blessing of having great people around me whom know when to tell me to stop.

Chaotic - a mix of ideas, various ways and techniques. I’m always trying to make every project unique in style so that it will look like as if it is crafted by different artists and yes, every project looks unique!

Personal - the projects here are the ones that I have put the most of my inner self into. I have spent a lot of free time on adjusting details and many "after work hours" on finishing touches. This is how a life of a perfectionist is wasted! :)

I think those words fit your works very well. Here is a question I always want to know from arists, who/what are you inspirations and how do they influence your style?
When I was a kid, I am inspired by the world of comic books, cartoons, toys and video games. Reading my first "Lobo" comic book made me fall in love with Simon Bisley’s crazy and messy art style. I remember browsing through tons of video game magazines - not even having a computer or console myself - and wondering "how have they made them". My first PC shocked me with the pre-rendered video sequences in games like "7th Guest" and "Little Big Adventure".  These were something I wanted to do when I was small and now I am definitely chasing my dream.

I am glad you are doing what you like for now. I know you have worked with many big brand companies before, which project was the most memorable one and why?
The most memorable one is the 2008’s "Walkman Komiks” (http://chomiki.bbcg.pl) project. It was really a big deal for me back then,  because it was an opportunity to win love from such an important client as Sony. I had spent a lot of time to preparing the concepts and fortunately people at Sony were open to fresh ideas. Even though it was hard to create all the characters from scratch in the Walkman’s toon world, there was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the process a lot. It was rewarding when I saw the whole project publicized in the end. Isn’t it great to get paid for doing such exciting things?

It definitely is great to get paid for doing things that you like and I am happy for you! Last but not least,  if you could rework an ad campaign for a company, which company would you choose and what kind of ad campaign would you do?
I’m looking at campaigns and the community from an artist’s point of view, not creative director’s. I’m not into planning campaigns or criticising the way they’ve been directed; however, if you want me to choose one, I’ll choose big: worldwide Chupa Chups’ campaign including this crazy Chuck character. What I think Chuck needs the most is someone he would finally fall for - "Chick" who loves lollipops just as much as him!
