[Un]Discovers: Brad Pickard

Brad Pickard, a talented artist I have met few months ago during an art exhibit, is alway a person I want to feature on this blog. I am blown away by his creativity and his works always have the haunting feeling which capture my heart. Today, I am honored to present you this edition of [Un]Disocvers, featuring the talented Brad Pickard.

Cardinal Were Learning To Survive On Earth Worms and House Flies

Brad, finally I can have a feature about you and I have some questions to ask you. First, what made you want to become a digital artist/illustrator? Where did you learn your graphic skills?
I've always been drawing ever since I was a kid so I just tried to keep doing what I do. I went to school at Seneca College for Technical Illustration. My current day job is in advertising as a digital artist for Instil Productions here in Toronto.

Sheperd De Les Diablos

According to what you just said, basically you are artist throughout you life and I think this is great! So, how will you describe your illustration style? What are your inspirations?
I used to collect comic books when I was a kid and although I don't collect them anymore I drew a lot of inspiration from them. There are many artist that I like today as well... Craola Simkins, Nathan Ota, Andy Howell, Camille Rose Garcia, Jason Limon, Ray Caesar... I could keep going.

Silver Shuck

Now I understand why I see comic's element in your works! Out of all the works you have done till this moment, which piece is the one that can best represent you? Why?
I'm not really sure what piece would best describe me. I really enjoy painting birds though. I find their different personalities interesting. Most seem like such soulless creatures just running on instinct. Not that I view myself as soulless, but I like to allow myself to become lost and run on instinct when creating a piece.

Cliffsparrow Home Is Where The Heart Is

I have to say, your bird portraits are always so haunting but I love them. I know that you do both digital and hand draw works, which one do you like more? Do you plan to focus more on one of them in the future?
I have so many concepts and atrocities I want to create, some of them seem to lend themselves to digital and some towards illustration. So I will definitely continue with both.

Floating Earth

That's great! I am looking forward to see more of your works in both direction. Speaking of digital arts, I am still very amazed by your Octogirl piece. How did you and Dave Todon come up with this collaboration and concept?
Octogirl was the first collaboration Dave and I worked on. She started off as a sketch in my notebook that I intended to be a painting but I thought it would work better as an old side show portrait. I pitched the idea to Dave one night at the pub and that weekend we were octopus shopping at a Portuguese fish market.

Octogirl

I never know you actually bought an octopus for this shoot but seriously, this is one interesting work and I love it a lot! Finally, if your works could turn into products, what kind of products would you want to create and why?
I am going to be developing some products available soon for Skateboarder/ Illustrator Andy Howell's company Artsprojekt. Skateboards, t-shirts and prints will be available through my site soon: www.ourskyhasfallen.com

------------------------------------
I am sure by now you are feeling the haunting vibe from his works and right now, let's explore more about his lifestyle with the following trivia questions.

Bacon or Sausage?
Bacon (the only cure for a hangover)

Dog or Cat?
My brother is an undertaker and one of the case studies he did in school was about a little old cat lady... no friends, no family. She died one day in her house completely alone except for her cats. Apparently when she was found a month later and she was only a skeleton. So, no matter how much you care for and love a cat, the fact is, if you die it will eat you. (it's true cat fans, google it)

So definitley Dog!
(Note by Marcus: This is truly haunting, thanks my friend)

Red or Blue?
Red

Pencil or Pen?
Pen (Nothing beats a plain old black bic pen)

Wood or Bricks?
That depends, am I throwing them?
If so, I'd have to go with bricks.

Should Have Left This Place

Mac or PC?
Mac

Snoopy or Garfield?
Snoopy (he doesn't crave flesh.)

DC or Marvel Comics?
Marvel (more super powers, less utility belts)

England or Canada?
Canada (gotta stick with my plaid flanel heritage)

Summer or Winter?
Summer

I am glad that Brad has answered the questions I have for him and now I learn so much more about this person. I wish Brad all the best and I can't wait to see his next exhibit in the future. If you like his works, you should take a look at his official site Our Sky Has Fallen. All art works are courtesy of Brad Pickard.
