[Un]Discovers: Julie Kaye

We have discovered another fabulous artist, Julie Kaye, from the UK.  Her art is very conceptual, it reflects the struggles that happen in the world nowadays.  Having world issues as her all time inspiration, she used extreme elements in her art to suggest the opposing force she found within them.  Current issues that affect her the most including politics, genders, wars, race, religions, etc., and she embeds nature as a metaphor to her ideas, forming her style of art.

We are lucky to have her telling us more about her arts and some of the great artworks she had done in the past.  Below are some of the art work and descriptions by Julie.

Send in the messenger

Send in the messenger is about the current situation with the oil spill. The Lizard represents those responsible and the owl is the necessity for wisdom, as it has yet to fly.....it is still hope.

Geisha Gun The gun

Geisha Gun The gun is her sexual power. The dinosaur also represents the power of those she serves and the past. Whilst her actual role as a Geisha is one of complete submission.

Confession - guns without sounds

Guns Without Sounds I'll talk about the Confession - guns without sounds. The gun is the silencer. The fear that keeps secrets. With particular reference to a story I came across about someone that wrote a book to tell people they had aids. The bullets that stream from her head are therefore part blood part metal and they are being shot into someone else out of view. The gun is phallic in this instance, the penetrator and the silencer.

Below are what she had to say about the idea of extreme and use of indications.

1. Can you tell us how did the extreme inspire you and get you started to express them through your illustration?

The very nature of our being is extreme. Nature is extreme....our emotions....everything. There is not one thought you can have that won't exist as an opposite in someone elses mind. My life is certainly an indication of this. It is how these extremes co exist that inspires me.

2. Realized that there are lots of guns and shootings in your arts, why would you use them to help conveying your messages?

Guns represent power. The guns were used as part of a series of pics dealing with Power and Submission.  In some cases they are phallic representations. I find guns aesthetically beautiful. The shape, the material, the mechanics....all quite sexy.

Thanks Julie for spending her time to answer some of our questions. We really look forward to see more of your arts from you.
