[Un]Discovers: Paris Li, Caitlin Power, Aime by Monica Mei

This special edition of [Un]Discovers is all about 3 talented fashion designers I have met during the White Cashmere 2010 event. There 3 designers are Paris Li, Caitlin Power and Monica Mei from Aime. Now, it is time for us to know their vision on the gowns they have designed. (Remember, they are all made of bathroom tissue!)

Paris Li

What was your reaction when you knew you are one of the participants for this White Cashmere event?
I was excited. I feel honored to be able to contribute a dress to this event since I am still an up-coming designer. Also, it is a very good challenge for me to create dress with bathroom tissue.

Where did you get your inspiration from for you dress?
It's from the Origami. This image had come into mind when I was thinking how to design this dress; therefore, I have decided to follow my instinct and designed this dress.

Did you have any problem when working with the bathroom tissue?
No, I did not have any big problems using the bathroom tissue to create this dress. The only problem I have is the softness of the tissue so it caused a slightly difficulty for me to create the shape of this dress.

Is this dress similar to your own collection line?
Yes it does. Pleats is one of the major elements in my main collection and you can see this element presents on the dress.

Other than the Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon, what else can you associate with pink?
Nail polish and high heels.

What was your reaction when you knew you are one of the participants for this White Cashmere event?
I felt very honored. Since I live in Calgary, I was surprised Cashmere reached out to designers whom live outside Toronto.

Where did you get your inspiration from for you dress?
I took the inspiration from the strong vibrance of breast cancer and the dress I made is very structural.

Did you have any problem when working with the bathroom tissue?
I did not have a lot of problems when working with the tissue but looking for the right tool to cut out those square on the dress was a bit tough.

Is this dress similar to your own collection line?
Yes it does. Architectural blocks always exist in my collection and this dress I made is leaning towards a more futuristic theme which is similar to my S/S 2011 collection.

Other than the Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon, what else can you associate with pink?
Bubble gum, candies, toys, childhood, and of course, bathroom tissue.

What was your reaction when you knew you are one of the participants for this White Cashmere event?
It was huge honored. I am also very excited because this project associates with my main collection line. My collection's philosophy is about love yourself and love others and right now when you purchase the Cashmere tissue papers, part of the profit will benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and I think this is very meaningful!

Where did you get your inspiration from for you dress?
Beauty Queen is my inspiration. This is a dress about people who have gone through this tough experience and they are always Queens to us. The design of this dress is heart-shape, v neck and on one side of it, there is a huge pink ribbon wraps around the shoulder. Also the bottom of the dress has rough edge which represents the challenges breast cancer patients have to go through.

Did you have any problem when working with the bathroom tissue?
Yes. Since the material is tissue paper, you cannot put it in water, and you have to be very careful when iron and steam the garment. As you can see there is the woven part in the dress and it took me hours to make this happen. If you look closely, the layer is getting thicker towards the end of the gown.

Is this dress similar to your own collection line?
No, this dress is different than my own collection line. For my collection, you can wear the clothes over and over again without limitation of the seasons; however, this dress is unique.

Other than the Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon, what else can you associate with pink?
Feminine, girly, Barbie Dolls, cotton candies, fun and basically everything related to feminine quality.

I hope this 3 mini interviews have satisfied your curiosity and I hope you enjoy looking at their creations as much as I do. I am looking forward to see what these 3 designers have in store for us next season! Congrats, you 3 have done a very well done job!
