Icon: I Scream Awards - Angela Martin

It's our 4th edition of the I Scream Awards interview and today we have Angela Martin, an amazing fashion photographer, to look back on what she has done in this year and plans for the future.

What was the most memorable thing you had done this year with your career? Why?
At the end of last year I won a photography contest, awarding me with $3000. Immediately, I knew that I had to take that opportunity to find my own studio space to work out of, and in February of 2010 I moved into my new live/work space on Dundas Street West. Having unlimited access to 3500 square feet of space allowed me to create and work non-stop, which ultimately lead to increased profits of almost 300% and helped me secure paid fashion editorial jobs for 2 of Viva Magazine's issues & a 10 page spread in Snowboard Canada (Woman's Annual Issue). Best decision I've ever made!

How do you view the fashion scene in Toronto right now?
I haven't been around in this industry long enough to make major comparisons (5 years in photography, 2.5 of those, actually working in the fashion industry) to what the scene was like previously, but I'd say it's getting bigger and better with every passing year. There is a wonderfully creative community of people in this industry that inspire me daily, it just seems that so many of them feel the need to move to bigger and better markets outside of Canada to really make their mark. Understandable, but it begs the question, will our country or city ever be considered a heavy-hitter in the eyes of international fashion professionals? Who knows, I think we have a long way to go but it could happen. Until then, people need to get over their "big-fish in small-pond" syndrome, that's one thing I see too much in this type of work.

What are you aiming to achieve with your career in 2011?
What can I say, every year has been greater than the last!
I try to leave some spontaneity in my life and my work, so I have no concrete plans for the upcoming new year. I do know that I'd love to spend more time traveling in 2011 and create some work abroad. I hope to continue building my client list, and adding to the list of publications my fashion work has appeared in. I also hope to get more exposure through exhibitions like Women x Women (I'd love to participate one day) and gallery showings, and will continue to hone my craft & style.

Come back next week for more coverage on our I Scream Awards Interviews and Photos!
