[Un]Discovers: Zenon Turczyn

It's the third week of our collaboration with eia and this week, we have a new shining star in the media industry for this edition of [Un]Discovers. His name is Zenon Turczyn and Zen Artists is his portfolio website. Now, let's get to know this talented individual!

Hi Zenon, thanks for letting me to ask you some questions. So, what made you want to be in the film industry?
I studied film in university and knew that this was where my true calling was to be.

I wish that were the case for me when I was in university. Well, who are your inspirations?
Some of my biggest inspirations are Martin Scorcese, Wes Anderson, Quentin Tarrantino, Christopher Nolan, Clint Eastwood and Charles Bukowski.

Martin Scorcese and Christopher Nolan are my favorites right now. Out of all the projects you have done so far, which one can best reflect your shooting style?
If I had to choose a film that hints towards the direction of my shooting style it would be “Sleepyhouse”, a short film about the relationship between a teenage boy and his single father that reaches a boiling point when the boy’s grandfather is on his deathbed. I used a lot of close ups to enter scenes to capture the character’s emotions and contemplation.

I always like to see the close up shots because I am always interested in people's expression. Can you tell my readers what projects are you currently working on right now?
Currently I am producing two films and directing a promotional video and several experimental instillations for CANFAR in collaboration with Producer Kyle Kofsky. The first is a short film entitled “Call of the City”, which is about a teenage girl from small-town Canada who is suddenly forced to choose between moving to the city to pursue her creative passion or staying home to care for her disabled father. The other project is a feature film entitled “In Return”, which is about a socially awkward young man who falls in love with a homeless girl.

I am excited to see what you have in store for us in the near future! Since you are based in Toronto, how do you view the Toronto film industry right now? Is there anything you think we could improve in this industry?
Toronto is a vibrant and dynamic industry but more financial incentives and support is needed to help emerging talent.

I do have to agree with you about the financial support. Last but not least, If you could work with an international celebrity in the future, who would you want to work with and what kind of film would you want to shoot?
Tough question to answer because there are so many talented actors. I would love to work with Ryan Gosling in a Wes Anderson style dramedy.
