[Un]Discovers: Dimitris Petrou

Let us introduce this talented Greek fashion designer, Dimitris Petrou.  We got to know about him through his very creative project called Sur Mesure.  Sur Mesure is not just an ordinary fashion collection, unlike other collections, it has another art elements behind.  We are lucky to have Petrou himself to tell us more about himself, as well as the collection.

1.First and foremost, tell us some background of yourself. What drew you to fashion design?

I can remember my self sketching ever since I was a little boy. I always found it exciting to create on paper my view of clothing, designing things i couldn't find in the market in my own point of view. I studied fashion design in Athens, worked as a free lance stylist and collaborated with many designers in Greece.Up until now i have presented 3 full collections and right now i'm working on my latest project.

2. What is main theme of Sur Mesure? What is the inspiration and where did it come from?

The main idea of my latest collection "Sur Mesure" is a modern presentation of tailored clothes, introducing to the crowd the idea of a unique piece made to measure. The first hint of inspiration came to me from a certain scene form Edith Piaf's biography "La vie en Rose" where the band is all dressed in grey suits and white shirts. Working that idea I came to an end by presenting a collection in total grey in three light tones, working mostly with silk, soft leather, lace, velvet, suede and handmade knitwear.

3. What is it like to do a fashion show off the runway, and why choreography?

Its was a big challenge to present off the classic runway for the first time. I am a firm believer that fashion is highly connected to art and this is the approach I tried for my presentation. By showing in an art gallery a more innovative aspect of a "catwalk", like a choreography was the most appropriate way to go. It was a true experience to see my designs presented like that.

4.  What did you want to achieve from this project?

The presentation of "Sur Mesure" was also the opening of my showroom. My personal space in which everyone can order pieces from the show made especially for them or a new outfit designed exclusively for them, always in the concept of 'pieces made to measure'. It was a double celebration of both the new collection and the creation of my showroom.

5. What is your next project? Future plan?

Living in a period of a bruised economy, just being able to be active as a designer and present a collection every season is the best future plan and a blessing. I am currently working on a new project. The main idea will be surrounded by the arts, like my last show, but being in the same time so much different. It's too soon to talk about it. Everything will be presented in its full extension in approximately two months.

We thank Dimitris a lot for his time to do this interview with us and looking forward to see his new project.
