[Un]Discovers: Saint Hollywood by Uta Bekaia

Uta Bekaia, the designer behind Saint Hollywood is our final designer to be featured on this blog for the FAT designer profile series. Uta Bekaia's design always has a very dramatic feeling and today I am lucky enough to be able to ask him some questions.

Hello Uta, thank you so much for letting me to feature you on this blog. So how did you become a fashion designer? When you were a child, did you dream about being a fashion designer?
As a child I actually really wanted to be archeologist, and find dinosaurs bone. I was addicted to dinosaurs and flowers, first word that I ever said was “beautiful”. As I grew up I went to art school, studied fine art and industrial design. My career in fashion began by chance when a friend, who organized avant-garde fashion festival in Tbilisi, asked me if I wanted to do fashion installation at the show. I was 17 at the time and the show was a big success. I got lots of attention and for me and I knew it was a sign...

That's amazing! At  17 you could already do a fashion installation for a fashion festival! Now I am being a bit more curious, what are your inspirations? Do you have any specific designers you look up to?
I get very inspired just from everything I see around me, the patterns that follow our lives, nature and its shapes and colors. I look up to lots of period, oriental clothes, film and art. As for designer, I love Japanese fashion as its very inspirational.

I always love Japanese fashion and right now Phenomenon is definitely one of my favorite brands at this moment! In your own words, how will you describe your brand? What is the signature element in your collections?
My brand provides wearable art and these are not everyday clothes. I always create over the top and super eccentric, one-of-a-kind pieces for those who like to be walking art themselves.

I can see the dramatic element in your pieces. What is the inspiration for this F/W collection? Is there a particular piece that can represent the whole collection?
This collection has two inspirations - it's black S&M aesthetic mixed with colorful psychedelic colors and textiles.

I can assume there will be some interesting pieces then and looking forward to see that during FAT! So now I have one big question: I am actually still a bit confused with what Saint Hollywood does, will you be able to give us a description of it?
Saint Hollywood is a concept, multi media project that was founded and inspired by Willard Morgan, artist and performer at Ideal Glass gallery in New York City's East Village. With this project other artists and myself recreate the idea of the art factory. All artists working with different mediums connected to each other with one idea of the saints living among us and transforming them into modern day icons.

Now I have a better understanding on how Saint Hollywood does now! Last but not least, what will you be working on after FAT? Will you be able to give us a hint on what we will expect to see in the future?
I have couple of projects coming after FAT, a fashion installation show in June in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After coming back I will start working on a new collection for summer/spring that I will show later in the year. Inspiration for this collection will be lent art, nature, mix of glamour and mud ….
