[Un]Discovers: Ultraviolet Sound

Recently I have come across a pop music group named Ultraviolet Sound and their music is filled with energy. After I saw the megamix video which gives a preview of their upcoming album (will be on sale on April 12, 2011), I just cannot resist the temptation to feature them on here. For this edition of [Un]Discovers, I am proud to be able to interview Sarah and Sami, the brains of Ultraviolet Sound. Now let's get ready to know them!

Hi Sarah and Sami, I am very glad I can have a chance to ask you two some questions and thank you for doing this for me. So, for my readers who may not be familiar with Ultraviolet Sound, how did you form the group? Why choose Ultraviolet Sound as the name?
Sami: We met in New York City while Sarah was signed to a label within EMI. Unfortunanlty the label folded and ALL of the artists got dropped. Brutal. During that time we collaborated on some music out of our mutual passion for electronic and dance music, and shortly after moved to LA and formed Ultraviolet Sound.

Sarah: Ultraviolet Sound is about stripping away limitations, being fueled by your passion, being an artist, loving life and being free.

Sami: Ultra means beyond, ultraviolet light is just past the visible spectrum- and sound also means true. So to us, UVS is a message for ourselves and our fans to push boundries, be who you are, and live your truth.

Live your truth, that is a very cool meaning of the group's name and I like it! Which singers are your major influences? What kind of things have you learnt from him/her/them?
Sarah: I am heavily influenced by John Lennon, Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, Prince, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, Karen O, Goldfrapp, Fiona Apple...The thing that these "singers" have in common is complete individuality, impeccable timing and an ability to tell a story with their voices. They have all taught me that your personal quirks and inflections are what makes a singer great.

I have to agree, the singers who have influenced you all have a very specific attitude and I believe this is why they are super stars! Since Sarah is more into pop music while Sami is originated from electro music, how will you define UVS' music genre? Do you consider the sound as electro pop?
Sarah: UVS doesn't have 1 music genre. We are music lovers and are inspired by so many artists and genres- we just make whatever music comes out.

Sami: We just call our new album pop music. We've also done house and dubstep remixes, mashup covers, and our original productions range from 70bpm to 180bpm with alot of different inspirations. We've done some electro-pop tunes but thats just a piece of UVS.

Sarah: One day were gonna retreat into the depths of the desert and make a hippie-folktronica album.

Hippie-folktronica album, now I am looking forward to that day and I am sure it will be good. Well, I know UVS debut album will be on sale on April 12, 2011, would you mind to tell me which song is the most memorable to record?
Sarah: LaLaLove was one of my favorites to write and record. Sami and I were super frustrated as we began to write that day because nothing was really coming out, then we just sat down at the piano and talked about what really sets us free, which is music, and we just began writing about it. Sami started playing the intro synth progression and I just blurted out "Im in La La Love with the music, with the sound, with the rhythm, gettin down with the lights on low..." and the rest just followed. I also had such a blast recording the vocals for this song, we sculpted every background vocal part with so much detail and its one of my favorite elements of the song.

I have given that song a listen already and I must say that is a very good song especially the La La La Love part does stick to your brain after one listen. I have watched the megamix video recently and I realized fashion does play a major role in the group. How do you define your fashion style and is the group trying to use the fashion factor to bring out some kind of message?
Sarah: Fashion is a huge part of UVS. It is just another way to express ourselves and is an extension of our music. Our fashion style is based on contrasting ideas...high class with a touch of trash, hippie glam meets future warrior...playing with dark and light, protection and freedom. I have been a clothes whore since i can remember and it is and will always be a crucial part in my music and art.

You and Sami do have do have really good fashion style and I think this element does give an edge to the group. Last but not least, if UVS could collaborate with any musician in the world, who would you want to work with the most? Would you create a new sound for this musician?
Sarah: Goldfrapp- it would be sex on a stick!

Sami: The fun part of collab-ing is embracing style of the other musician/artist your collabing with, so we wouldn't want to change their sound/style. I'd love to work with Skrillex, but who wouldnt.
