[Un]Discovers: Lisa Nishimura

You have seen a lot of illustration works created by Lisa Nishimura on this site and I believe a lot of people will want to know here more. Today on [Un]Discovers, I am honored to have her as my feature artist of the week (and you will actually get to see her non-fashion works as well)!

Hello Lisa, finally, it is time for me to do an interview on you! First question, what made you want to pick up fashion illustration? What is the biggest challenge for you for doing this kind of illustration?
Well, honestly, it was with your encouragement that I started illustrating again. I studied illustration and design in school but my day job is design on the computer. It had been years since I picked up a paintbrush or pencil simply to draw. Fashion has always been a love of mine. I think it's simply the best marriage: Illustration and fashion.

I think the biggest challenge is doing the clothes and designers justice when drawing what I see. I don't always know how a garment is constructed. Also black and white tend to look flat unless there are lots of structural elements.

I am flattered that my encouragement was one of the reasons why you picked up your paintbrush again and look at the amazing works you have done so far! How will you describe your illustration style?
My illustration style has evolved a bit since I started not too long ago. I used to outline things with marker but now I feel it's more refined when I only use a pencil. Right now, I would say it is very detailed. I must admit I do have a bit of OCD and I have really ridiculously tiny brushes to draw in all the details. I would like to experiment, however, with a looser style in the future.

Trust me, you are not the only artist who has OCD. I can tell you when I am working on photos, my OCD can be worse than you. So, which fashion illustrators do you like? Have you learnt anything from him/her/them?
My favourite fashion illustrator is David Downton. I think he is incredibly talented. I also love Laura Laine, Ruben Toledo and Stina Persson.
Each one of them has their own unique style. I would like to develop a style of my own that's instantly recognizable as well.

From what I have seen till this moment, your illustration style is quite unique and this is probably one of the main reasons why I love to show your works on this site. Now I am curious, how did you start the runway series? Up till this moment, which runway set is your most favorite? Why?
The runway series just started on a whim. During NY fashion week, one night after work, I just went and bought some watercolor paper and a brush and decided to do some illustrations.

I think my favorite set is the Burberry set. I spent a little more time on it and it turned out well. It also helps that I'm a huge Burberry fan and love the clothes. I think that comes out in the illustrations.

That Burberry set was great and I am hoping you will continue this series as you never know what this series may lead you into in the future. What will be your next project? Can you give a hint on what kind of projects we will expect to see from you soon?
I'm not sure what my next projects will be. I would like to try some different styles maybe and different techniques. I would love for my drawings to look more spontaneous.

It sounds like in the near future, we will be seeing some new works with different style from you! I am excited about it! Last but not least, if you could have a chance to illustrate a look book for a particular high fashion brand, which one would you've love to do? Why?
Well Marc Jacobs has always been a favourite of mine. I have consistently loved his collections from the very beginning. So Marc, give me a call! Haha!
