[Un]Discover: Khrystyna Fomenko

It's the last week of my features on some of the Central Saint Martins graduates and today I have Khrystyna Fomenko. I really like her designs as I am a big fan of Art Deco inspired clothing. Today, is my pleasure to introduce Khrystyna Fomenko to you.

Hello Khrystyna, thank you so much for letting me to feature you today. Will you be able to give a brief description of yourself?
Not really.

Now this answer is going to create buzz as I am sure a lot of my readers will want to know you more now. Now let's get back to the questions, what was the main reason why you wanted to study fashion design?
I always was interested in creative subjects. But I chose fashion because I wanted to be making something functional. To me, fashion means things you can wear, it has a clear purpose.

I always view every piece of garment as an art piece and I have to agree with you that it has a clear purpose. Which fashion designers do you look up to? What have you learnt from them?
There are many fashion designers and brands that I appreciate and respect. With some I find the overall vision and concept very admirable, for example Maison Martin Mrgiela or Jill Sander. With others I enjoy the aesthetic, like Calvin Klein Collection. And then there are some designers who seem to bring surprising but clever solutions each season, like Miuccia Prada for instance.
Just annalysing and comparing the different approaches of these designers to fashion gives me many interesting thoughts...

I am a fan of both Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons as both of them always bring different flavours to the fashion industry each season. So let's get back to your graduation collection, where did you get the inspiration? What words will best describe your collection?
This collection was inspired by New York City. Ideas for the silhouettes and shapes came from the research on the '50s and early '60s clothes. The textures and colours were inspired by Art Deco architecture and interiors. However, the most important element that I wanted to convey was sophisticated and elegant, yet simultaniously effortless feeling, which I experienced from the City.
The key words for my collection (as pretentious as it may sound) are: effortless cool.

I find your collection to be very classy and I love the silhouettes of it. Well, let's imagine this: if you could have a supermodel as the cover girl for your promotion campaign, who would you want to choose? Why?
I don't tend to remember models.. But I really like Lara Stone's look, I would choose her.

Lara Stone will be a good choice and I also have Arizona Muse in my mind when I look at your collection. Last but not least, what is your future plan? Are you already working on your next collection?
Not yet. But I'm having some ideas, of course. I would really like to move to NY, it seems to inspire me a lot.
