I still remember while I was browsing through the web one day and this designer's collection had instantly caught my eyes. Ivan C. Nunes is a recent graduate from Central Saint Martins and his menswear collection has won him the 2nd runner prize at the B.A Honors show. I really like how he has injected his Brazilian fashion culture element in his designs which makes the collection very refreshing! Without further ado, I now introduce you to Ivan C. Nunes!

Hello Ivan, it is definitely my pleasure to have you on the site today. I am a fan of your collection so it is great to have a chance to ask you some questions. So, will you be able to give a brief description of yourself?
I would use Marie Antoinette’s words to describe myself: “There's a kind of a little child in me, and the Art of living well is to sustain the innocence of that childlike quality “

It seems like every successful person has an inner child inside him/her and our goal is always to make suer the inner child is happy and pure. What was the main reason why you wanted to study fashion design?
The main reason for me to study fashion was because I am very visual person. Also, I love to manipulate people using art and design as a weapon.

I love how you describe art and design as your weapon as I rarely hear designers say that! So I want to know, which fashion designers do you look up to?
After working with Lucas Ossendrijver and Alber Elbaz I learnt how to pay more attention to details and how to play with masculine and feminine designs avoiding clichés.

Wow, working with Lanvin must be a fun experience and I would love to hear more stories from you in the future! Now, let's get back to your collection. Would you mind to give us some information about your collection?
This collection was inspired by the letters Oscar Wilde wrote to his lover Bosie and I came up with a story like this: Wilde exiled in Brazil instead of imprisoned in London. In order to not end up making a collection of an epic dandy, I analyzed nowadays Brazilian’s sartorial. Realizing the way men in my country likes to dress I vanished important lines in tailoring; did hybrids in between jackets and shirts; made a relaxed silhouette and got rid of the excess, thus peeling off all the layers of tailoring putting in the outside horse hair canvas and linens.

Brazilian culture was a very strong element in my collection. I collaborated with Brazilian brands and artisans for shoes and acessories. My sunglasses and buttons were made out of buffalo’s bone and horn by a native Brazilian from a village in Bahia. The knitwear was made by a top Brazilian knitter, Marisa Ribeiro, who used typical ways of my country to knit linen. Also a very talented jewellery designer, Inderjeet Sandhu, created my sunglasses chain out of rivets which the chain was an aggressive but  feminine piece.

I really like the Brazilian culture element in your collection and this is probably one of the reasons your show has caught my eyes! Speaking of fashion in different cultures, what do you think is the main difference between Brazilian and British menswear fashion?
To be honest, there is absolutely nothing similar between these 2 fashion cultures. While British is all about traditions or authenticity or pushing boundaries, Brazilian is all about practicality, social acceptance and comfort.

This is some interesting insight and I am sure I will keep this information in mind in the future. Finally, now you have graduated, what is your next step? Are you planning to create your own line?
No I am not going to create my own line yet. Things have changed a lot comparing to the 60’s and 70’s. We live in a world where time is money and it is all about money. I can be very creative but I still have a long way to become a businessman. Lets face the fact, if I find the right partner … why not? But on my own I rather work for a well established group or do a revival of a big brand.
