Icon: Anne Cayer

Last week we have featured 3 of our collaborators and we hope you enjoy them. For this week, before we release the short documentary for you to watch, 3 more collaborators will be interviewed by us and today, we have Anne Cayer, the brilliant mind behind The M Lane and FAT Blog.

Do you consider 2011 a successful year for your blog? Compare to 1 year ago, do you think your blog has evolved and captured a specific audience?
This year has definitely been a successful year for my blog. In its first year, The M Lane was a place for musing on my newly acquired freelancing life – a bit of accountability here, a bit of sharing there; its mission was vague at best. As my freelance status stabilized, my writing did the same, garnering some compliments which prompted me to expand my subject matter. In this past year, The M Lane became a place to share hidden gems from around the world in fashion, art, music, and creativity.

Out of all the things you have done this year, what was your biggest achievement?
It’s been a big year over all, for which I am incredibly grateful. But on the blogging front, my biggest achievement was working with |FAT| Arts and Fashion Week – first with using the blog to introduce our followers to the amazing talent joining the festival, and then with leading a great team to cover 4 nights of mind-blowing events. |FAT| has turned into something truly amazing and to be a part of that is indescribable.

Other than your own blog, which Canadian fashion/arts blog do you visit regularly? Why do you put it on your must read list?
Think CONTRA is at the top of my list. They offer a great spectrum of fashion, art and culture stories, but manage to fill the content with things that constantly make you wonder where the hell they find out about this stuff. It’s what I aspire to – to be a place for great content that you can’t easily find elsewhere.

What kind of expectation do you have for your blog in 2012? Do you think you will be adding some new elements to it?
The M Lane has, to date, flown by the seat of its proverbial pants. In 2012 there will be a bit more wrangling, namely of myself, making sure to up the content level. There will continue to be a focus on fashion, but with more art, music and travel content to balance it out. I’m also in a lifelong love affair with food, which surprisingly hasn’t made much of an appearance on the blog. That will certainly be rectified.

The overarching theme of the blog is moderation – it’s an “everything in moderation” mentality. I want this to be better reflected. The M Lane is a place to come for conversation starting tidbits and fascinating discoveries. Think of it as your personal treasure trove of neat things.

I know there are a lot of people looking for ways to break into the Canadian fashion and arts scene, what are some of your advices you can give to them?
Be present, and be open minded.

There are some great people in the industry, but you have to meet them to know them. And you have to keep an open mind when meeting them. You’d be surprised at the amount of people who have a bad rep who are actually sweethearts, and vice versa. If you want to make good in this industry, be someone that people want around.

If you had a chance to collaborate with a fashion brand for your blog next year, which brand would you want to work with? What kind of projects would you want to do?
Given any chance in the world, there’d be a Balmain-sponsored photoshoot extravaganza with Rock in Rio as the backdrop.

But in the realm of possibility?

I’m really looking forward to what’s to come with this year’s |FAT| Arts and Fashion Week; there’s an incredible roster of talent to be shown. Certainly more Q&As with designers; I love hearing their stories & sources of inspiration.

On The M Lane front, I’d love to offer some behind the scenes action. I’m infatuated with all the madness that happens to bring this industry to life and would love to share little glimpses of it with others. From the big names: seeing the production of my beloved Bedo & learning how The Room does what it does; to the up and comers: finding out just how much yarn goes into a DylaniumKnits scarf, or what it’s like to be a model on set.
