[Un]Discovers: Ryan Rader

Ryan Rader, a painter that has totally blown my mind when I see his works in one of the art exhibits. I still can't imagine how he can combine cells and nature objects together in one painter. Because of that, I have asked him to be featured on this blog and to my wonderful readers, you are definitely in for a treat this time!

Hi Ryan, I just have to say you are extremely talented and I am so honored to have you on this blog! So, how did you become a painter? Were you under any formal arts training before?
I have always had a natural aptitude for visual communication. For most of my life I was very heavy into drawing, using pencil and pen and being endlessly engrossed in detail. I would spend numerous hours drawing from my imagination, captivated by the potential of inner vision! It was not until recently that I picked up the paintbrush; I suppose the pencil, for a long time, was portable and easily accessible. It was about 4 years ago that I took painting more seriously and began to teach myself how to paint with oils. I needed to understand colour and see my work go from black and white to a larger more complex spectrum! I approached painting a little more traditionally, through materials, media and application. However I am obsessed with the inner forms and worlds of the imagination, so my subjects remain surreal or metaphysical.

I love imaginations and that is probably one of the reasons why I am attracted to your works! What are your inspirations?
The natural world is endless and rich with inspiration. But if I were to specify, I would say the botanical microscopic and the fungal. I use biology as a source to recombine forms and create new and exciting forms unseen.

Biology is never my friend but after seeing your works, I may consider to pick up a biology book in the future. Anyway, your works have really blown me away with the detailing. How will you describe your works?
I can describe it through what I call creative biology: the observation of natural forms and the act of recombining seemingly unrelated forms to reveal new structures and atmospheres. The result of this is often alien-like organisms and atmospheres; these unsettling but beautiful forms are meant to take the viewer on a sinuous journey through the picture, reminding them of nature’s remarkable creativity. Our natural environment is changeable and in constant evolution - what will come next? The unimaginable futures of forms, intermingling and transforming

Your works are definitely taking my eyes to the future and I can't get enough of them. How long does it usually take you to finish a piece? Do you listen to music when you paint to increase your productivity? If so, what do you like to listen?
It all depends on the size of the piece, as little as 10 hours to 70-80hours. Yes I do often listen to music while I paint. I enjoy a wide range of music anything with a cello or violin works very well. Instrumental and ambient to help me achieve the “zone.” My favorite band is Tool.

You sound like a classical music fan for a sec then you just end your answer with Tool, which I think you have a very diverse music taste. Other than cells and plants, are you planning to draw some other things in the future? If so, what is the next area you plan to explore?
I’m quite obsessed with the biological right now and probably won’t be finished with it any time soon. I have explored environments with man-made materials and structures that are inspired by M.C Escher. Maybe figurative…not sure exactly, there are so many possibilities!

I can't wait to see what you will come up with in the future! If your works could be display in a magazine in the future, which magazine would you want? Why?
I don’t really read magazines, but if I were to choose a type, it would be scientific or science fiction. It would be great to work directly with biologists and possibly help illustrate new discoveries or theories.
