Icon: I Scream Awards - Mike Lewis

It's the second day of our I Scream Awards feature and today, we have Mike Lewis! As many of you may know, we are huge fans of his works (and we even did an [Un]Discovers edition about him) so we are very happy he has made it to the list! Let's see what he has to say about this year and the future plan in 2011!

What was the most memorable thing you had done this year with your career? Why?
It's hard to pinpoint the most memorable thing of the past year. I moved to Toronto about a year ago from the West coast and basically decided to rebuild my entire book from the ground up. I've just been shooting constantly. I've had my work published in several Canadian and International fashion magazines, I've worked with some iconic clothing designers (like David Dixon) and have been flown overseas to shoot a job in Portugal. This year has been a whirlwind for me.

How do you view the fashion scene in Toronto right now?
To be completely honest, I love the fashion scene in Toronto. It's not huge but it's certainly not small either. The people are accessible and approachable. There is a strong sense of community amongst designers and photographers, stylists, makeup artists, etc. Everyone's kind of fighting the good fight. Sure, we all wish we made more money, had larger markets, were paid fairly and promptly, whatever... But the thing is, if it were easy everyone would do it. Because let's face it, this industry is so much fun. When I moved to Toronto in October of 2009, I instantly had a sense that this city is bursting with creative energy. You could literally feel it. Everyone I met (mostly in the fashion scene) was so excited about what they were working on and who they were working with. I was fortunate enough to meet up with James Nixon (of Fantastics Mag) who really opened my eyes to the inner-workings of the fashion industry in Toronto. That's the real beauty of Toronto I think. Amazing people will meet with you and they will help you if they can. I honestly believe this is a very special time and place, one that might not be truly recognized and appreciated until it has passed.

What are you aiming to achieve with your career in 2011?
For me, it's always the slow climb. Quite simply, I just want to get better. And that applies to every aspect of my life.

Tomorrow, we will have Tristan and Hawley from Sidewalk Hustle!
