Back in July, I have written an entry about a talented fashion illustrator named
Michael Sanderson. Till this day, I am still addicted to his amazing works. Today, I am fortunate to have him to be featured on this edition of [Un]Discovers!
Hey Mike, thank you so much for answering my questions as I know you are very busy right now. So, tell me, how did you become an illustrator?
I originally wanted to be a video game designer, but when I showed my character design work to colleges, I was told to go into fashion.. so I did.
That's a interesting career path change but to me, both of them are creative jobs and I am glad you are in fashion illustration right now! In your own words, how will you describe your drawing style? Who has/have influenced your drawing style?
I just drew from a very young age and developed my own drawing style, but in later years I really liked the work of Photographers; Mert & Marcus, Guy Bourdin, and Mario Testino. So my work is more-so inspired by fashion photographers.
Ah, Mert & Marcus, this duo has always been my favorite. Out of all the projects you have done so far, which one is the most memorable one? Why?
I'd have to say Vogue Nippon...because they were so cheap, considering...
All right, that sounds reasonable to me why you think this is the most memorable experience. Well, I know you have recently launched a new online magazine called Birche which features your latest menswear illustrations. What is your aim for this magazine? Are you planning to put womenswear illustration in the magazine in the future?
Recently relaunched and rebranded Birche to included womenswear, the goal is to have a medium where I could have total control and exercise my styling skills without limitations and create fashion spreads without sourcing samples, casting models, or scouting locations. Basically with Birche I can create everything in little time and without leaving my desk.
I am totally loving your site and I can't get enough of your works! If you could work on a high end fashion brand's look book for one season, which brand would you choose? Why?
Right now, I'd say Lanvin. I really like the direction Alber is taking the design house and his shapes are imaginative and simple, much like my illustrations. It'd be a good partnership, I think.
Lanvin, that will be an interesting collaboration if that happens. I hear that you are going to launch a clothing line in the near future. Will you be able to give me some information on this brand?
It'll be called Ceder, and much like all my ventures it's named after a tree. That's all I'll say at this point. ;-)
